Hyper Detailed Analysis
I’ve been reading through Zen again. There has been a lot of reflection on myself from this year compared to last year’s me. There is a specific chapter in the book where Pheadrus is helping a university student write an essay. She is trying to put all this detail from a large picture into her essay but is struggling badly. Pheadrus tell her to put all her attention into the brick wall, than onto a single section of the wall, than onto a handful of bricks, and than to finally put all her focus onto one brick, as she does this she eventually find details about the wall, the section, the handful of bricks, and then the most detailed analysis when focusing on one brick.
That to me represents our understanding of our forms. We have a form (let’s take Lao Gar), it’s comprised of three forms that make it complete, at the whole form level you can have a basic understanding of the sequence and techniques. Looking further into Lao Gar I by itself, you will start to work on the phrasing of sequences, the detailed footwork behind the techniques and the best spots you have to regain your focus. Now look at a certain sequence in Lao Gar I, where are your hips? Where is your center through the sequence, where are you looking and where is your target? This is where I believe most people will start to actually implement their intent because working on a single sequence will allow you to put more mental effort into your repetitions and analysis. And lastly, let’s look at a single technique. What is your connection to the ground feeling like? Are you stable? What muscles are activated, and how was your timing on this technique? Did you actually block the attack or penetrate through your target (depends on the technique your thinking of right now).
I believe this chapter alone offer a very valuable insight into how we can make better decisions in our training and allow us to gain insight we haven’t yet learned.
